Thank you so much Col – and for a year’s worth of information, entertainment and sharing in your Column. You and your listeners might like to check out a podcast where James (Jolly) and I discuss versions of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony
Regarding the above, Jon Tolansky has emailed about recordings by the great albeit maverick Albert Coates
‘I know that lunatic version of the first movement by Albert Coates. What was he doing? Strange conductor – fine talent I think, but I find so many of his recordings are so rushed and also messily played. I wonder if his performances in the theatre and concert hall were really like that, as he had, as you know, a very formidable reputation. The only first hand anecdote I can give you about him was told to me 50 years ago by the percussionist Jack Lees (Senior) who said that on a recording session with Chaliapin (I think Boris Godunov) Coates and Chaliapin had a physical punch up and Coates pinned Chaliapin to the ground and nearly strangled him. It may be true, because Jack was a down to earth Yorkshireman with little sense of fantasy!’

Interesting eh?
Very best, as always

Thanks Rob, I’ll seek the podcast out. Would like to hear Coates’s Jupiter. BTW, my first recording of K551 was Boston/Leinsdorf. Col
