Didn’t I grow up with his Rach 3 under Kondrashin on RCA perhaps. I never bought it but it was a hot LP from
my memory and a sign that the two super powers could collaborate with each other.
So he was a game changer as well as a true virtuoso.
Happy Birthday Byron and many more.
Edward, you mean Van Cliburn with Kondrashin. Janis recorded Rach 3 in Boston with Munch (also RCA), although there is a Rach 1 with Kondrashin in Moscow (Mercury) coupled with Prokofiev. Col
Thanks Colin.
Well
I am now going to buy his Rach 3 in Boston and Munch to celebrate his long and illustrious life.
Van Cliburn certainly recorded Rachmaninov 3 with Kondrashin (RB-16162). Horowitz recorded it with Reiner/RCA Victor Symphony (ALP 1017) and as far as I am aware Janis recorded it twice, once with Dorati/LSO (Philips 6582 006) and once with Munch and the Boston (VICS 1032).
The joy of collecting. Instant correction and additions. Thanks to all for this jolt to my memory of great LPs! Janis was a wonderful pianist with many great recordings to his credit. Wasn’t he Horowitz’s only pupil? I shall now go to my shelves to select some for listening today. Happy birthday maestro
