I met this fine composer at Maida Vale after a revival of an earlier Prom commission was played.
A short introduction by me to say “thank you “ for an interesting work turned into a long chat about how he became a convert to Sibelius a few year’s before that (he was past 80). He heard Osmo Vänskä in some of the symphonies. His father, Walter, took the attitude in his childhood that Sibelius was “a good composer of light music”. Hence Sandy never showed any interest in the Finn until this sudden conversion!
A lovely man with an open mind and an excellent composer as well!
    Happy birthday.
