Lovely man I have worked with since the 1970’s for Enigma, DG Archiv, das alte Werk, Hyperion. I saw him a couple of months ago at the concert put on by Lindsey Boyden. Same IP as ever.
Funniest memory is when we recorded Pro Cantione Antiqua in Triumphs of Oriana, with IP directing. When it came to “Come Blessed Bird” (text below), a thrush joined us outside the church (All Saints Petersham) in a musical pause. We left it in the final master-tape and it is a feature of the finished product.
Come, come, blessed bird,
and with thy sugared relish
help our declining choir now to embellish,
For Bonnyboots, for Bonnyboots,
that so aloft would fetch it,
Ohe is dead and none of us can reach it.
Then tune to us,
sweet bird, thy shrill recorder,
and Elpin, and I, and Dorus,
for fault of better,
will serve in the chorus:
Begin and we will follow thee in order,
Then sang the woodborn minstrel of Diana:
Long live fair Oriana.
Ian and I shared a reception lunch table celebrating a 60th wedding anniversary of a close mutual friend a few months ago.
It was a super time spent together and I send Ian the happiest of birthdays and many more to look forward to.
I used to go to Ian for singing lessons many moons ago as a student.
He was so delightful, and worked very hard to make me better singer!
He would often waive the fee, as I travelled down from Manchester to this home in Raynes Park.

I agree – a lovely man and a fine singer. John did some recitals with him and Ifor James.
