Leonard’s St Louis/RCA recording of Schubert’s ‘Great C-major’ Symphony is one of the best (alongside, for me, such as Boult, Gielen and Szell) with all repeats observed, except in the Finale, wisely.
A London Symphony, Cleveland 1989.
BBCSO, BBC Proms 2003.
New to Leonard’s discography… Bach, arr. Camille Saint-Saëns – the third-movement ‘Sarabande’ of J. S. Bach’s G-minor English Suite for keyboard (BWV808) – Yuri Torchinsky (violin); BBC Philharmonic.
Also new to his discography… Bach arr. Eugene Goossens…
Both were recorded for Chandos – the Saint-Saëns for the Bach Transcriptions for Orchestra release (CHAN 9835), and the Goossens (BBCSO) for Bach: The Conductors’ Transcriptions (CHSA 5030), with neither included due to a lack of space on the respective discs, details following (repertoire researched by Edward Johnson). These YouTube appearances are their first ‘issue’, with which Colin’s Column is delighted to collaborate.
Goossens remastered October 10, 2026…
