When I met him some years ago, he didn’t even own a piano or have one at home. He would go out to a studio to do all his practising.

I went to his wonderful Poulenc concert at Reading town hall recently (with his new piano partner, as on the new cd) and was delighted to find that his new manager was a former pupil of mine the cellist Jonathan Hennessy-Brown (formerly of the Santiago String quartet). I told him that I heard Pascal play all the Ravel in 1975 at the RNCM for the centenary concerts; another one was Gerard Souzay who gave us 5 encores including his beloved Azulao (by Ovalle) and the child’s aria from L’enfant et les Sortileges. In the Roge concert i was next to a dapper gent who made intelligent comments on my A level Shakespeare play I was revising in the interval: I later saw photographs that made me think it was Vlado Perlemuter.
