Lupu the the structuralist, the colourist, the piano master, telling stories you could believe, has never failed to make me think, to open my eyes to the score, to make me listen afresh. Piero Rattalino likens him inimitably to ‘a rock that deflects the flow of the current as opposed to a fish that becomes a part of it. … [a man] who, with his physical presence, says nothing to the world of what he is: one of the great leading figures in musical history.’
Beethoven’s Third Concerto remains indelibly associated in my mind with the brilliant younger days of Lupu in concert. His 1978 Salzburg Easter Festival performance with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic has just been uploaded to YouTube – a rarity to be sought out, unmissable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZ2bvBtoioY
