Finally, at 33, further fun with Fučík, from a later-generation Czech Phil and the admirable Mr Neumann.
Birthday cheer from David G too. We are all getting old but at least we’re doing it together….
Rob has reached an iconic age for a record collector. I’ve been there twice and I’m now 77. In October I’ll be 76 again.
Happy birthday, youngster. (83 next month)
Many happy returns to Rob Cowan.
78 (r.p.m. indeed!). Funnily enough, 1948 was the year Columbia launched their 33.3 long playing (LP) record, so all in all, Rob’s birth coincided with the most significant development in audio.
A much missed personality on Radio 3, and I owe many record purchases from his playing such diverse music, including the dynamic Symphonica Poema; Katchaturian’s 3rd Symphony, which he played in full one morning. I can’t see R3 devoting such time to a work like this in their morning schedules anymore, more’s the pity!
Happy Birthday Rob: your mammoth reissue reviews in The Gramophone are still a joy; your memory is phenomenal. I hugely miss your R3 morning programmes and the only time I have ever listened to Classic FM was when you did that cd review programmes on Fridays with your rather morose-voiced colleague. A recent article I especially enjoyed was your LA MER comparison (Mark Elder ‘won’) and your sharing my preference for the fanfares near the end that Debussy took out as they sounded too like a fragment of a popular song of the day. Why the BBC don’t use you regularly on Building a Library, I don’t know. Though the current interview format with the oily Mr McGregor is an insult to the expert reviewers and I know at least one of those agrees!
Your enthusiasm and knowledge are inspirational and the same is true of Colin of course.
Thank you so much everyone – an ideal audience!
Rob
Enjoy the day, dear RC!
Last-minute plans mean that I shall be in Blighty this final week in April visiting Mum (97, and still going strong!), so if you and/or Col and/or David G fancy meeting up, do reach out.

Lovely to hear from you AA. Unlikely I’ll be able to meet up, for medical reasons – a bit infirm at the moment – but do keep in touch!
Love, RC
