Hadn’t heard Golovanov’s Rachmaninoff 2nd, but his Rach 3 with the USSR State SO is mind-blowing – had it for over 60 years and never heard anything comparable in commitment, phrasing and virtuosity from the wind players – thanks, in those days, to Robert Maxwell (whose company imported Iron Curtain LPs when no-one else would touch them). Electrifying playing.
