Stravinsky’s Greeting Prelude (1955) “for the 80th birthday of Pierre Monteux”, in two performances…
First with my friend Leonard Slatkin conducting the BBCSO (leader Michael Davis) at the Barbican Hall some years ago now, in 2000 in fact, the Orchestra’s seventieth birthday (BTW, the seated singer is Michelle DeYoung):
And then this brilliant piece (with its so-familiar singalong celebratory tune twelve-toned) comes from Oslo:
And some famous composers have got together…
Happy Birthday dear Colin!
Your column has brought us much joy and important news in a time when we especially needed to be connected. Thank you so much and wishing you many more years of happiness to come, JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic
Happy Days, young as ever, sharp of mind, besotted music lover, man of fair play…
Birthday cheer from the windswept northlands of Barnet! X
I remember a friend of mine laughing at something her son had said one day, and I asked what it was. Well, she said, he had suddenly come out with: ‘Mum, I envy the old’, and she asked why. ‘Well,’ he said, ‘they’ve made it!’ Third ‘well’ in a row, our Anderson genes have got us this far, if with the odd bump in the road — let’s both hope that they hold out a little longer! So bottoms up — or, as the French say, ‘dry arse’, which is hardly more dignified. But it’s worth a drink in anyone’s language!
Many happy returns dear Colin.Thank you for your friendship and your indefatigable output through thick and thin on this website. May you enjoy many more birthdays to come.
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Colin. Only two more years and you can claim your state pension. I can claim mine this June!
Have a good day.
Colin, if I may, although our paths have never crossed, and I am only a recent reader of your excellent column, I would like to wish you a happy birthday. I have been listening to the Celibidache concert and it’s amazing; and the Schuman third symphony is new to me and that’s a great find. Thanks, Pete Sinclair

Sending you all good wishes from Barcelona on your birthday, Colin. And, echoing Elizabeth above, it’s an absolute marvel that you’ve kept everything going these past years!
Well done Colin and may you enjoy many more such anniversaries. You’ve achieved so much and there is far more to look forward to over many more years. A Happy Birthday to you indeed!
Many thanks to all of the above and also to those who emailed me with similar sentiments. Col
Happy Birthday, Colin! You may feel oldish but you are 17 days younger than me. We used to meet in Gramex and the late Neil’s cd barrow and nod hello at concerts…your column is a true joy.
