This very desirable set pays tribute to a notable conductor, Paavo Berglund, 1929-2012, whose tenure (1972-79) of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra yielded numerous recording sessions – not least Symphonies by Franck, Nielsen, Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams, and of his Finnish countryman Sibelius’s cycle (including his pioneer version of Kullervo) with two subsequent releases of this repertoire (Helsinki; Chamber Orchestra of Europe) as well as other Sibelian gems plus a range of musics, especially a distinguished Smetana Má vlast with Staatskapelle Dresden. Please see below for artists and enticing repertoire (some tasty Russian and Scandinavian morsels) that also includes timeless Concerto collaborations – such as with Leif Ove Andsnes (Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 3), Arto Noras (Arthur Bliss’s Cello Concerto), Ida Haendel (Britten, Sibelius, Walton Violin Concertos), Paul Tortelier (Shostakovich, Walton Cello Concertos) and he with Yehudi Menuhin and the LPO in a spontaneous-sounding account of Brahms’s Double Concerto. First-class presentation, including original artwork. I’d say, don’t hesitate, although release date is January 19, so it’s a gift for New Year. Warner Classics 5419766150 (42 CDs).
