Penderecki’s then unnumbered Symphony was commissioned by Perkins Engines, based in Peterborough, where the premiere took place, LSO conducted by the composer, and then taken into the studio. The concert was live on Radio 3; the rest of it was under Meredith Davies, Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony and the 1919 Firebird Suite.
