Petition: Save the BBC Singers. “Petition to close at 5pm Friday 17th March 2023”. Update, March 16, petition to stay open given the interest and momentum. Update, March 26, petition has reached 150,000 signatories.
It is disappointing that the BBC Singers are disbanding after 99 years. It is most definitely a bad decision, and I am filled with bitterness that BBC would make such a choice.
It takes years to build a choir with the quality of the BBC Singers. The plan to disband this choir is complete folly. It’s being treated like a boy-band.
The Singers are a symbol of the best work the BBC does for classical music. Their loss would gravely weaken the choral achievements of many decades and would undermine the BBC’s long-held reputation as a key custodian of classical music in Britain.
As a member of the Singers between 1970-2001, I think it iis astonishing that they should be disbanded for a saving of possbly a paltry 1 million per annum. There is no other group in th UK that can sight-read and , in particular; BLEND together as well as the Singers. No ad-hoc group brought together on various occasions could come anywhere near their capabilities. The very fact that: as a group that work together nine-tenths of the time in a single year shows their amazing facility. They were formed in 1924. Can’t they even be allowed to stay until 2024 to complete their 100th anniversary? Please think again very carefully BBC before it is too late.

it seems not only shortsighted of the BBC to axe the BBC Singers but it is just immoral to deprive so many people who find singing in a group is a real therapy. The group activity gets them through these difficult times because a simple social activity is so uplifting.
PLEASE BBC DO NOT AXE THE BBC SINGERS THEY ARE INVALUABLE
Last night radio 3 broadcast the BBC Singers in Bach motets. I had to switch off because the artistry was wonderful and I felt so sad listening to what might be one of the final performances by this superb group … unless the BBC butchers (destined to be loathed) climb down from their appalling decision to axe the Singers and also cut the English orchestras.
This an appalling strategy. The BBC Singers lead the world in terms of quality and reperttoire
This is the start of a devastating slippery slope, come on BBC re think your strategy

Shame on those at the BBC who have made this deeply ill-judged decision. Take a pause, consult widely, think again––and think deeply!

Why on earth disband such an influential and superb group of singers.
Because the BBC bosses are shortsighted idiots.
What a petty saving, compared to Lineker’s salary.
Disgraceful.
