I was unaware of this very effective orchestration, but prefer the original, especially in the Columbia recording with Glenn Gould and Claude Rains, who – with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid – was superb as the composer in the 1946 movie Deception, containing the original version of Korngold’s Cello Concerto (later worked into a concert piece), played by Eleanor Aller. Perhaps Leonard Slatkin could record this Concerto?
This documentary includes the Korngold conducted by LS, with his brother Fred Zlotkin as soloist…

“Performed by Francisco Gabarro (cello) and the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Gerhardt.”
I agree with Bob, this is a very effective orchestration but it ideas rather get away from the point of the original composition. I, too have always been very fond of the Raines/Gould recording but having been involved in a modern recording for SOMM (which includes Strauss’s other narration with piano accompaniment, The Castle by the Sea – it was good to hear another interpretation by that fine actor, Christopher Kent.
