Let me quote from The Record Guide 1955 – Edward Sackville-West & Desmond Shawe-Taylor – discussing the Third Symphony in Rachmaninoff’s own recording and Golovanov’s recording – with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra (as it said on the Supraphon 10″ LP label – ‘…Rachmaninoff (and Golovanov too, for that matter) reveals all the horrors – crime, despair, blasphemy – on the brink of which this symphony is always hovering, though without tumbling over it…..the quality of [Golovanov’s] performance is electrifying and above all of a kind we seldom, if ever, hear from Western orchestras. The woodwind leap on to their phrases with the precision and attack of wild cats, and the string playing has a sweep and glow that carry all before it….the performance is too spell-binding to be resisted.’
I agree wholeheartedly – one of my all-time recordings. Nothing I’ve heard since comes within a thousand miles of it.
What an amazing recommendation Bob.
Col, we are deluged with your Rach performances, all of great interest.
Thank you.
What a composer particularly when heard in these amazing performances.
Truly eye opening.
