Recommended – Kenneth Woods conducts English Symphony Orchestra in Sibelius Six & Tapiola.
In all honesty I cannot fault these two performances. Ken Woods has studied the new Critical Edition of the 6th Symphony and it shows.
Tempi are just right, observance of dynamics is sure footed (unlike the new crop from Finland alas) and I cannot recommend both performances too highly. Tapiola never drags as in some others recently, although I think the Makela recording is the highlight on his new set of the symphonies.
Woods deserves high praise and so do his totally committed players.
