In recent years Peter Donohoe has been busy recording – Mozart for Somm, and Busoni, Grieg and Mendelssohn for Chandos, just a few examples – as well as for Signum, Russian repertoire, Messiaen and Ravel, and now, for that company, Haydn, opening this project with nine Sonatas and other works. With excellent sound courtesy of Mike Hatch (December 2019 and December 2021, Germany/England) Donohoe gives consistently stylish and affectionate readings – shapely, nimble – of always-enjoyable and -resourceful music (154 minutes’ worth to ease the woes of the World) that makes for listening pleasure via an attractive piano of ideal lightness and clarity. Volume One is thoroughly recommendable, Signum SIGCD726 (2 CDs), with successors keenly anticipated.
