A very fine voice and a great singing-actor. His Don Giovanni is still the best I’ve come across in the opera house (he recorded the role for Richard Bonynge in 1969). He also made a brief but highly enjoyable appearance in Claude Berri’s 1999 film Manon des Sources.
    A memorable career.

Agreed! He was a much-recorded artist and gave of his best in the French repertoire especially. He had that special ability afforded to a few of bringing performances in the studio to vivid life and making them wonderfully non-visual ‘theatrical’ experiences.
