Alexander and I studied English Education at New York University’s English Education program at Oxford University in Oxford, England, for six months, three in the summer of 1998 and three in the summer of 1999. It was an amazing program. Alex and I spent the two summers as part of a small group of graduate students working on our Masters Degrees; we were joined by another small group working on their doctorates. The work was slightly different, but not fully: a 3-hour class in the morning, individually study followed by group work, then individual reading and studying, then shared papers after dinner…. Then we’d go to the professors of that week’s favorite pub. This was followed by just us singing at the piano. I’m still not even describing it all. I realized I left out punting on the river (not the Thames; there are two rivers in Oxford). Alex was the best punter. Nobody was more fun on that river. In fact, Alexander was fun in everything we did. He was a great singer. He knew every show tune. He was a kind, open-hearted, person, a great story-teller. I don’t want to leave out how much he loved his sisters. The first summer nobody knew the identity of their father whereas the second summer somebody figured it out right away. It made no difference in Alex’s manner. He was Alex, warm, kind, funny, thoughtful, entertaining, caring. He was genuinely well-liked by all. It made no difference which summer. I was fond of him 100% of the time. I guess I could say I knew him pretty well, well enough to know that he was in love the first summer. She spent only the first summer. I knew well enough to know how he felt. In some way he wore his heart on his sleeve. I ran into him a number of times over the years: we both lived near Columbus Circle. I’m really saddened by all our loss of Alex. I really am.
