In the late 40’s/50s people knew Zizi Jeanmaire through dance and her marriage, in 1954, to Roland Petit – an enduring partnership. In the 60s my generation got to know her through Peter Sarstedt’s 1969 Novello Award hit “Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?”: “You talk like Marlene Dietrich, and you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire / Your clothes are all made by Balmain and there’s diamonds and pearls in your hair”. Our television screens seemed to be filled with little else. Fifty years on, it’s still a wonderful period piece.
