This is a beautiful tribute to a wonderful but somewhat forgotten virtuoso whose fame sprang from this early 1950’s recording of the glorious Sibelius Violin Concerto.
I have her recording of the Walton Concerto made quite recently in Norway I believe.
Her death will allow her career to be properly assessed and, hopefully, she will be acknowledged as a great player.
I heartily second Edward’s remarks. Why this wonderful artist remained in the shadows is a continuing mystery to me. I seem to remember reading that she was not happy in the ‘jet-set’ circuit, preferring family life. Well, good on her! Our loss, though. That she was in the top flight is well born out by her Sibelius Concerto, which I got to know as a schoolboy from an old Capitol LP (it has been reissued on CD). Her more recent Walton and Brustad coupling on the Norwegian Simax label is also a fine example of her gifts. In fact, Simax has done her proud with several issues. Well worth investigating.
