Very sad news – Colin was a good friend and a very fine artist. He was in the wonderful film ‘Quartet’ directed by Dustin Hoffman, with Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, etc. Lovely man.
I met Colin at the ROMEO social bash organised by Bob Matthew-Walker and found him a very congenial companion, always ready with a story.
The film is a delight and should be seen by all music lovers; insights galore.
Although Colin and I were never in the same orchestra, we joined forces at Benslow Music and for many years co-tutored the annual WindFest course
The highlight of these courses was always the tutors concert in which Colin and I had a wonderful opportunity to make up for a lack of playing time together.
What a great artist he was
He also persuaded me to join his department of Woodwind as a professor at the Royal College of Music, where I am still delighted to be teaching
RIP Colin.I owe you so much
Colin was an amazing musician. His recordings of various undisclosed gems for Clarinet and Piano with Oliver Davies are superlative. A hugely eminent teacher at the Royal College of Music his memory will live on through his many successful pupils and grand pupils in the profession today. Thank You Mr. Bradbury
Very sorry to hear about CoIin. A brilliant orchestral Clarinettist, soloist, teacher and publisher. I had lessons as an undergraduate from Colin when he came up to tutor the Cambridge Uni MS wind section in the 70s. I then played next to him as a freelance in BBCSO – Brahms 3 at Fairfield Halls if I remember.. I also heard him play the Nielsen Concerto at the Proms in the 70s. A very thoughtful and intelligent musician and teacher who cared about his students, he was also committed to rediscovering gems from the clarinet heritage and produced excellent editions for his Lazarus Edition and fine recordings of this repertoire. Even though I was never formally his student, I learnt a lot from him and rated his playing very highly…30 years as Principal in BBCSO speaks for itself. The UK has lost another legendary wind player! RIP Colin.
I was fortunate enough to study with Colin at the RCM during the 1980’s and found him to be a wonderfully inspiring teacher. His ideas on the clarinet were thoughtful and deeply logical and completely transformed my playing. He also served as Principal Clarinet of the BBC Symphony Orchestra with great distinction for over 30 years and his numerous recordings of lesser known pieces for clarinet and piano ( with Oliver Davies) stand as testament to his outstanding musicianship.
Thank you Colin.
Colin was my professor at the Royal College of Music (1972-5); he was a superb teacher to whom I owe a terrific debt of gratitude. I now offer my sincerest condolences to his family.
I was very sad to hear this news. I worked with Colin for nearly 27 years in developing Lazarus Edition (named after the distinguished Victorian clarinettist Henry Lazarus). He visited Halstan on many occasions to discuss his requirements for the engraving and printing of each new work. His mischevious sense of humour coupled with his exacting standards made each visit a delight.
I would like to send my sincere condolences to his family.
A very great loss to the world of classical music. I first met Colin some 25 years ago when I worked alongside him at the Museum of Music History. With his infectious smile and patience with my faltering steps, he always gave generously of his time to share his invaluable knowledge and very amusing anecdotes. I had enormous respect for him.
