phenomenal musician; wrote more symphonies than Derek Bourgeois 371 ? versus 116…..that last movement of Rimsky is just amazing!!
One of the grand daddies of great Finnish conductors. Thanks so much, Col, for alerting us to that Brahms 4. I intended to listen only to the first movement before beginning my day, but had to put plans on hold until the very end. What a wonderful performance. The music is allowed to unfold, spaciously, in its own time, powerfully sung and deeply considered. A challenge: listen to the second subject of the slow movement, or the passacaglia finale (has the tragic face of the latter ever sounded so dignified, the conductor’s ego completely at the service of the music?) and remain dry-eyed. I failed the challenge.
An indomitable personality.
He commanded wide respect and was Dave Hurwizt’s favourite Sibelian. In many ways he was mine too.
A great, grand musical figure who has left a rich legacy of music making including his own!
