A recording session with the LSO in the 1980s was only my second or third with an orchestra, and as a young producer I had a lot to learn. After a first take of a thickly-scored tutti, I asked Kurt to use harder sticks. The reply, measured and austere in manner, has stayed usefully with me to this day: ‘Andrew, just tell me the sound you require – not HOW to achieve it – and I will oblige’. Excellent. Salutary.
