Indeed sad. Had a lot to do with David in the seventies and eighties. He used to stay at our place in East Sussex – talking, confiding, drinking and playing into the small hours. A terrific Lisztian: a beyond white-hot performance of the Norma Fantasy at the Wigmore remains indelibly in the memory banks. Had a lot to say, positively, on piano rolls. R I P
I was there too when he played the Norma Fantasy at the Wigmore Hall. I have never forgotten it: one of the most exciting and passionate renditions of the work I’ve ever heard. This is very sad news. He was a serious artist and a man of great conscience who made a significant contribution to this world. Have many fond memories of both David and his beloved Jane. RIP
I have only just learned of the death of David Wilde and am sorry not to be able to send condolences to any of his relatives if any survive. I am a year younger than David. I got to know him well between 1980 and 1984 when he was working in Hannover and I was with the British Council in Hamburg. We saw each other often and his wife was instrumental in finding me temporary accommodation when I first moved to Oxford in 1984, though sadly, I never saw either of them again. I tried to make contact with him many years later after my retirement when I learned he had moved to Edinburgh but he didn’t respond to any of my messages. He gave recitals for me in Hamburg and in particular arranged a superb performance of Mahler’s ‘Lieder Einer Fahrenden Gesellen’ with Thomas Hemsley and David at the piano. He also arranged other chamber concerts for me with, I think, Emmanuel Hurwitz, though I may now confuse the violinist he invited. For three or four years of my life he was an important figure and a generous friend. I am deeply sorry not to have seen him after my own leaving Germany and I have only just learned of his death. Lux aeterna luceat ei, and Jane.
