This is indeed very sad news: a wonderful singer and lovely person. Deepest sympathies to Tony.
I am so sorry to hear this. Jane was one of the kindest and most thoughtful of people, as well as being so remarkably, indeed amazingly gifted. After my husband died she kept in regular touch with me by phone and email. I rang and spoke to Tony earlier this year, and indeed was thinking I should call again. I knew of Jane’s illness, and her great courage in facing her troubles with such resolution and high spirits. John played many enjoyable concerts with her, and I have especial memories of one in Selwyn College Cambridge. She had travelled across the Atlantic on the so-called ‘red-eye’. Tony met her at Heathrow, and drove her, and a set of evening clothes, to meet us there. She sang a long and demanding programme, in various different languages including Russian, with no effort at all. She was a wonderful person, and in that now much over-used phrase, an icon. Her passing is the end of an era. I shall miss her, and send my deepest sympathy to Tony.
