Salya (as I called her) was my piano teacher between the ages of 8 and 13. My mother being Russian paid for my lessons in kind – I would take a tray of homemade pelmeny (meat dumplings) to my piano lessons. A wonderful teacher, could be very strict and made me very disciplined, subsequent teachers said I had a great technique when playing the piano thanks to Salya. I was very sad to learn of her passing. My mother and I caught up with her about 19 years ago at her flat in London having not seen Salya for many, many years.
