I am so sorry to hear this. John and Mike knew each other very well, and played together on occasions. He was the leader at the BBC SO when they recorded John’s Symphony ‘Of Time and the River’ (No. 4) and Flute Concerto. He must have been about the same age as John I imagine, so he did manage a long life.

A worthy colleague and successor to the great Martin Milner. My first concerts were the Loughran years at the Halle…much undervalued now despite the fine recordings of Brahms Elgar McCabe etc. I then moved near London so remember him well there also: his one eccentricity I think was to wear a blue rather than black suit. A truly great leader.

Mike and I were good friends and neighbours in our early teens. He was a very good tennis player and we went to school together. I followed his life and career and always watched his appearance at the proms. We both worked for the BBC , I was an engineer!
