Oh for such enlightenment south of the border. When will our politicians realise that learning a musical instrument is NOT an optional extra, a nice plaything to amuse the kids, but an essential factor in developing social and cognitive skills and a sense of teamwork every bit as vital as that which informs the great god sport? Back in the late 1960s/early 1970s as pupils in Barry Boys’ Comprehensive, we were graced with three peripatetic instrumental teachers and a truly inspirational O-level and A-level music teacher who neither patronised us nor the art itself. Happy days.
