The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Long Yu today announces its plans for the 2022/23 season following a challenging period of further lockdowns in the local area. The Orchestra’s new season at its home, the Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall, will be in front of live audiences.
Music Director Long Yu conducts 11 main stage concerts with a diverse range of repertoire at the Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall throughout the season. On 4 September Long Yu will conduct the world premiere of The Wheel of Time, a new work by Fay Kueen Wang that has been commissioned by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Other highlights conducted by Long Yu include two performances of Verdi’s Requiem [24-25 Dec] and the orchestra’s popular New Year’s Concert [31 Dec].
SSO Conductor-in-Residence Zhang Jiemin conducts a number of main stage concerts, including the world premiere of Liu Sola’s hour-long work The Legend of Monkey King which is a joint commission between Beijing Music Festival Arts Foundation and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Jiemin will conduct performances in Beijing [30 Sept] and Shanghai [6 Oct]. Jiemin joins conductor Zhang Lu for a special concert to mark the centenary of composer Zhu Jian’er, where each conductor will lead the orchestra in a performance of a piece by Zhu Jian’er [22 Oct]. Another highlight with Jiemin at the helm is the world premiere of Yu Ji’s Ode to the Silk Road, a work commissioned by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
The main stage concerts at Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall also feature a host of soloists including violinist Ning Feng, cellist Nicholas Tzavaras, 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner Haochen Zhang, and incoming Berlin Philharmonic Principal Viola Diyang Mei, amongst many others. Artist-in-Residence Guanqun Yu features in 5 performances including the Verdi Requiem [24-25 Dec], New Year’s Concert [31 Dec] and semi-staged Carmen [13 & 15 Jan].
Alongside the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra’s main stage concerts is their chamber series in the chamber hall at Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall. The 2022/23 season features performances by the Polaris Quartet, East Coast Quartet, Melody Quartet and many more, including chamber performances from SSO musicians. The series will, also feature a tribute to Zhu Jian’er, celebrating the late composer’s chamber works. The chamber series also features the orchestra’s popular Rush Hour Concert series which features hour-long classical and jazz concerts in the chamber hall.
