From Bavarian Radio website: Mariss Jansons’s successor as Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Bavarian Radio Chorus has been chosen: Sir Simon Rattle will lead the two ensembles beginning with the 2023/24 concert season, having signed an initial five-year contract with the Bayerischer Rundfunk on 3 January 2021. “It is an honour to succeed Mariss Jansons in this role, and I look forward to leading these wonderful musicians for many years to come.”

I must admit to surprise but Simon is very much his own man . I can think of many comments but will
limit them to just one.
Despite his two/three years to go in London and onwards to returning as hallowed guest his departure will be a tragedy for most if not all British composers hopeful of his patronage going forward. His repertoire will be big ticket to show London he is a true Master of the Universe. Such as the planned Janacek operas.
So perhaps his 2/3 favourite Brits composing nothing much of interest anymore rather than ,say, performing a work I know he has looked at, David Matthews’s best symphony , his No 6.
Farewell to his youth long gone.
Onwards to the utterly barren world of Lachenmann and other Germans little known here but due promotion in Munich of course.
Poor Simon.
