Viola as clarinet – Mozart’s K622 Concerto for the latter instrument works quite well on the former. Sensitive accompaniment from the Berlin Barock Solisten, moderate articulate tempos for the outer movements and a flowing one for the central Adagio – giving equilibrium across the whole – makes for refreshing listening, although the clarinet’s curlicues and mellifluous tones do not transfer too well to Diyan Mei’s viola despite his artistry. For K364 Mei is joined by his Berliner Philharmoniker colleague Noah Bendix-Balgley (BP concertmaster), played as scored and with a degree of reverence that befits this great work, poised/expressive and sublime in this performance, Mei now richer-toned, the Barock Solisten (further Philharmoniker members, authentic leanings on modern instruments) even-handed in their musicianship and fraternity. Odd, cryptic, ultimately unhelpful review. Too short to be of any help, I suppose.
