I wrote this on the day of the concert, https://www.colinscolumn.com/the-vienna-philharmonics-new-year-concert-2024-conducted-by-christian-thielemann-live-from-the-musikverein-on-bbc-two-tv-bbc-radio-3/, and now in response to Sony Classical’s release I find the recorded sound a bit bright and bass-lite, and the layout on the CDs is typically contrary to what happened. Musically and artistically, top marks, for a mix of rare and classic pieces played by an orchestra synonymous with this repertoire led by a conductor wholly at-one with its wonders, ditto Bruckner, included here, and Christian Thielemann’s Vienna/Sony survey of the composer’s eleven Symphonies is awaiting my attention. Meanwhile, enjoy this Viennese start to the year on Sony Classical 19658858932 (2 CDs).
