Paavo Järvi and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’s recording of Haydn London Symphonies Volume 1 received international acclaim and won them the title of “Orchestra of the Year” at both the 2023 Gramophone and 2024 Opus Klassik Awards.
“Pop another champagne cork” wrote The Times. “Haydn’s jokes and delight in incongruity are commonly noted, but it’s not often that performances actually make a listener laugh out loud. These did, regularly. Haydn is revealed in all his rainbow colours, technical mastery and engaging complexities.”
As Paavo and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie now prepare for the final celebrations of their 20th anniversary artistic partnership, RCA / Sony Classical releases Volume 2 of the Haydn project, coinciding with concerts in Hamburg and Bremen (28 Nov – 1 Dec) and an extensive tour of Asia (7 – 21 Dec).

What started out as a pandemic project, allowing the musicians to explore new repertoire in smaller formats, became a four year project which has immersed them into something much bigger than any of them expected. And after performing and touring across Germany, Austria and Asia, Paavo Järvi and The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen have made Haydn their own.
“On the surface Haydn’s music can often appear brilliant yet facile” says Paavo Järvi. “But there’s much more to it than that and, like Mozart and Beethoven, it is more complex and nuanced. This requires the kind of teamwork that can only be found in a group that thinks and breathes like a chamber music ensemble. With The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie it is one of our greatest joys to share in this amazing spirit. I hope when you hear our recording Haydn’s true greatness and genius will be readily apparent when you find yourself laughing with him.”
