Just a few words to point-up this cogent account, Marek Janowski belying his eighty-six years, leading a top orchestra (its concertmaster delivering a rapturous violin solo), disciplined chorus and four excellent soloists (see below for names), the latter positioned between instruments and choristers, a thought-through reading notably contrasted in tempos, so that, for example, the tearaway conclusion of the ‘Gloria’ was thrilling and the ‘Credo’ (“creedo”) unusually lively. Overall, the music spoke directly, with sincerity and devotion, without novelty, the score challenging and contemplative, and stimulating, the final plea for peace (“dona nobis pacem”) as relevant as it has ever been, cueing a long silence before applause, and then a thumbs-up and a smile from Janowski to his charges.
