Steven Osborne, with his third Schubert release for Hyperion (the second being duets with Paul Lewis), gives an imposing, going-places, account of the substantial A-major Sonata that is emotionally driven yet also shapely, sensitive and inevitable. Of standout mention is the second-movement Andantino (so innocent as described), its Winterreise-like tread turning to unhinged being especially compelling, startling, ending in shadowy solace, offset by an infectiously rhythmic and rambunctious Scherzo, its Trio meditative. With the expansive Finale, Osborne matches the scale of the first movement, unhurriedly encompassing its twists and turns until the opening music returns, predestined. The Moments are equally superb, each of the six pieces brought off with perception and flair – fiery, witty, soulful – for a set of infinite variety. Both readings deeply rewarding on Hyperion CDA68437.
