Edward Johnson writes…

Glad you like his Greensleeves encore.

He did in fact record it as a last-side 78rpm filler in 1949 to the RVW 6th with the New York Phil in its very first recording. Stokie beat Boult & the LSO on HMV to it by 48 hours! … However, LS’s timing for Greensleeves went well over the 5-minute mark due to what might be called his “spacious tempo,” so wouldn’t have fitted onto a single side. As a result, he abridged the reprise of the tune at the end and it was this version, at just over 4 minutes, that was commercially released.

Luckily the original uncut version survived in the vaults so we have both recordings on CD and on YouTube. The abridged version came out on Cala and the complete one on Pristine. I’m not sure if you’d like it as much as the encore, as LS and the NYPO give it a somewhat lush Wagnerian / Rachmaninovian treatment rather different to any English recording! … Anyway, here’s the uncut performance …

Abridged version as commercially released … He also takes the middle section a bit quicker in his re-recording at the same session, again to make sure the piece fitted onto the 78! …

Happy listening!
