Apropos the ICA Box you recently reviewed, Stokowski was a great encore giver and he treated his Proms audiences to several, including these two items. Neither have been commercially released but were taped off the radio. After the Shostakovich 5th with the LSO in one of his 1964 Proms, he repeated the ending of the symphony as his first encore and then, having asked the Prommers if they’d like to go home and responding to the resounding “No!”, he gave them the Greensleeves Fantasia by Vaughan Williams …

The last Prom he ever conducted was in 1966 with the New Philharmonia Orchestra and it ended with the Tchaikovsky 5th, also not yet commercially released. He praised the Proms audience for its unmatched enthusiasm and then asked if they’d like to hear some music by Mussorgsky. To the resounding “Yes!” that echoed around the Royal Albert Hall, he played an Entr’acte from the opera Khovanshchina
