Stokowski in 1918

Edward Johnson writes… “Stokowski made his last recording, Bizet’s Symphony in C, in 1977 at the age of 95. YouTube viewers now have the chance to hear his very first recording, made 60 years earlier using the old pre-electric acoustic method. It was a 10” 78 of the Brahms Hungarian Dance No.5 and as the performance clearly shows, in the five years since he had become the Philadelphia Orchestra’s chief conductor, Stokowski had turned it into one of the world’s top-class orchestral ensembles.”
