The compact and vivid Violin Concerto offers variety, edge, rhythmic elan, and a lovely sentimental slow movement. David Ludwig (born 1974) is the communicative composer, but imagine a work collaborated on by Khachaturian and Kodály edited by the Ravel of Tzigane. Bella Hristova is the committed, virtuosic and sensitive soloist. There’s also Dvořák’s great Seventh Symphony, given a fiery yet focussed outing by JoAnn Falleta and her dedicated players, always with a generous and expressive heart that compels attention, leaving no doubt as to the stature of this score, something not compromised by the violins occasionally being on the thin side or Kleinhans Music Hall sometimes seeming overly spacious.
