Radio 3 has the unfortunate knack of distancing instruments within this venue when, even in the furthest reaches of the Hall, the sounds are wonderfully immediate. Three times we are told by the R3 announcer that the Franck is “for solo piano”. Pretty obvious I would have thought, and if in a script before me I’d have edited those words out.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Italian Concerto in F BWV971

César Franck (1822-1890) Prélude, choral et fugue

Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) Variations on a Theme of Corelli Op. 42
