Moscow-born Kirill Kondrashin (1914-81)
Today is the First of May: here then is Shostakovich’s Symphony No.3, which is pertinently nicknamed, as heard from Kirill Kondrashin’s Melodiya recording.

Kondrashin’s Symphony cycle is the best available of a good choice. Start with No 4 and hear for yourself . His Mahler cycle is also excellent if a little on the fast side. It is not widely known outside of Russia I think.
He always thought Finns took Sibelius too slowly and his speeds in symphonies 3 and 5 go like the wind. Exhilarating yes, plausible no I think
A truly excellent conductor particularly in Rachmaninov.
