Alagna (Don Carlos), van Dam (Philippe II, King of Spain)

*Royal Opera House production notes: “This production used Verdi’s five-act French version of 1886, with some material from earlier versions, including Posa’s ‘J’étais en Flandre’, and the ‘Lacrimosa’ duet for Carlos and Philip.”

This was the third of the seven-performance run. Bondy’s production of Don Carlos (Carlo when sung in Italian) also went to the Edinburgh Festival that year; and furthermore was shared with Théâtre du Châtelet, conducted by Tony Pappano.

Dipping into this recording found a few technical gremlins; nothing too serious but there may be others.
