Note the title doesn’t include the word “Opera”. That’s because there’s none included. So, Sir Antonio Pappano’s Santa Cecilia versions of, say, Madama Butterfly, Turandot and William Tell must be collected separately. Otherwise the set is true to its stated intentions and handsomely celebrates Pappano’s two decades in Rome (he is now Music Director Emeritus), his new autobiography, and his impending sixty-fifth birthday (30/12). Below are lists of artists and repertoire, and some reviews of the very recommendable original releases, such as Bernstein, Dvořák, Mahler and Tchaikovsky Symphonies. There is much more to relish, such as Rossini and Verdi Sacred Works.

Also included is the first release of a vibrant Bruckner Eight from April 2019, forward-moving, generously and pliably expressive, sonorous, and vividly detailed, with an emotionally charged first movement that compels attention, a Scherzo of locomotive power, an Adagio solemn, intense and, at times, breathtakingly tender (the use of Robert Haas’s edition an advantage to seamlessness), with a measured and weighty Finale that journeys with certainty to a majestic and mountain-scaling coda.

To keep faith with those who already have these Santa Cecilia recordings, maybe there will be a separate release for the Bruckner, or a digital download – a few seconds follow, rehearsal – although the box takes up less space than the single issues. Warner Classics 5419779307 (27 CDs) is released on May 31.
