Perplexing! Can this be the same conductor who recorded the Enigma Variations with his own Pittsburgh Symphony for Capitol Records in the same year as this Cleveland concert? In Ohio, Nimrod gets mired in a funereal tempo (and this is NOT music of mourning, hijacked for Remembrance Day and other occasions of national grieving; rather it’s a portrait of a deep friendship) and there are myriad agogic moments and odd tempi. Apart from Nimrod, the Pittsburgh account is roughly similar in terms of timings with often similar tempi, but oh so much more natural and affectionate! I grew up with that recording in its Music For Pleasure incarnation (with VW Tallis on the reverse) and I enjoy it still: cool water as distinct from Cleveland treacle.
