Many years ago I had a delightful post RFH rehearsal chat with the maestro and his delightful wife.
When it came to whether his British orchestra understood Beethoven (the concert included an overture) he replied “No not at all”.
This then allowed me to be privy to his “understanding” which lasted ten minutes, probably the most revealing minutes for me to try to absorb his Beethoven revelations (at least to me) in my life.
Happy birthday Maestro. I will never forget your wisdom so generously given.
