L-R: Boult with Michael Tippett, Ralph Vaughan Williams & his wife Ursula, and the left leg of somebody unknown. RVW died on August 26, 1958, which helps date when this photo may have been taken. Tippett is probably discussing his Second Symphony with Boult, who conducted its premiere on February 5, 1958
The soprano soloist was Margaret Marshall, with ladies from the BBC Singers. The concert’s second half was VW’s A Sea Symphony conducted by David Atherton.
Footnote: the very last music that Boult conducted in public was on June 24, 1978, in the pit of the Coliseum, London, the end of a run of The Sanguine Fan, music by Elgar, staged by London Festival Ballet. Sir Adrian was 89.
