Ormandy also recorded the ‘New World’ in Philadelphia.
My first recording of Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony – Eugene Ormandy conducting the LSO in 1968 for CBS. I played the LP every day for a fortnight!
I remember selling lots of this recording in the 1960s from my shop in Birmingham. Earlier in my vinyl collecting days I had an Ace of Clubs LP with Enrique Jorda conducting and even earlier LXT 2871 Holst Planets/LSO/Sargent which I played every day when I got back from school on my brother’s Phillips Disc Jockey Major with a “featherlight” pickup weigh in at about 9 grams downward pressure. The poor LP finally wore out despite my polishing it with a smelly EMITEX cloth! Oh they were the days.

I still have my beloved Sargent and The Planets.
Alas the recording now seems dim and distant but I don’t get rid of any LPs from that era.
Not my first recording of the New World (that might have been Kertesz and the LSO), but my first concert encounter. Royal Albert Hall, 22 March 1959, LPO, Malcolm Sargent. Second tier box seat, 7s 6d. Moiseiwitsch played Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ in the first half.
