Jayne Anne Strutt summarises it all beautifully when commenting on the you-tube clip. Difficult to know why we no longer hear the many splendid light music pieces by Anthony Collins and his career as conductor also seems to be forgottrn -yet he gave some of the finest perfomances of Sibelius Symphonies ever recorded. His appreciation of correct period style in Haydn and Mozart should also be remembered
I have long collected tapes plus LP’s and recently two CDs of his own works.
His Delius is excellent as is his RVW Tallis Fantasia. Also his Elgar etc . His Sibelius is, as Tony says, truly wonderful
In most instances. Indeed his swift pace in No 7 can now be heard as being authentic to the Finnish tradition that we hear in Nils-Eric Fougstedt’s reissued recording now on CD from the Sibelius Society.
All from the mono era but in splendid Decca sound . Some of his compositions have not survived sadly including a symphony and Violin Concerto. Apparently his publisher threw them away!
