MISSING from BBC Proms 2023 – despite his turning 75 this year, there is nothing from Michael Berkeley’s output during this Proms season. So, here’s the American premiere, undated, of Berkeley’s Gregorian Variations; Pittsburgh Symphony/André Previn.
Commissioned by the Philharmonia Orchestra, Previn conducted the world premiere of Gregorian Variations in April 1982, Royal Festival Hall. Rest of concert: Strauss’s Four Last Songs (Margaret Price) & Vaughan Williams’s A London Symphony.
Nothing for the only living composer elevated to the peerage .
Has the BBC no regard for such an accolade for this approachable composer now widely known by R3 listeners.
